Headshot of Leo Twiggs

Leo Twiggs (Ed.D. ’70) is the first African American to graduate from the UGA Mary Frances Early College of Education with an Ed.D. in art education in 1970. Twiggs, a 2017 Order of the Palmetto distinguished award recipient, developed an affinity for batik while experimenting with it in the early 1960s. He has since created his own technique for the medium, breaking new ground in the art world not just for his powerful pieces, but also for his impact on art education in the South.
