Perryman family creates scholarship to blend science with the law

Dear alumni, alumnae and friends,

I am pleased to share that 1986 alumnus David G. Perryman and his wife Kirsti R. Perryman have created a unique scholarship fund that will benefit those with a degree or background in biology, genetics, chemistry, neuroscience or similar area.

Both David and his daughter Kirstiana, who earned her J.D. from UGA last year, have training in the life sciences. His bachelor’s degree is in genetics, while she majored in neuroscience and behavioral biology.

As to their motivation to make this scholarship available David stated, “Legal thinking is very similar to scientific inquiry in that they both require intellectual rigor and constant challenge to find the best answers to help people. Bridging these disciplines can lead to transformative innovation and we want to do our small part to enable future thought leaders. No better place to do so than at UGA Law under the dynamic leadership of Dean Rutledge.”

I am thankful to David and Kirsti for creating the Perryman Family Scholarship Fund as it directly speaks to part of our university’s motto – to teach, to serve and to inquire into the nature of things. David’s career is an example of an incredibly successful blend of science and the law and one that helped lead to the discovery, development and IP protection of molnupiravir, the first direct acting antiviral pill authorized in the world for the treatment of COVID.

Your law school is currently redefining what it means to be a great national public law school while never surrendering its commitment to accessibility and affordability. Scholarships, such as this one, help to make the dream of becoming a legal leader for state and society possible.

Sincerely,

Peter B. “Bo” Rutledge

Dean and Talmadge Chair of Law
