Tropic like it's hot!

The Stew: News for Stewardship Professionals

July 12, 2022

The summer weather is HOTTER than Georgia asphalt, but we made it to July! FY22 ended on a HOT STREAK, and we couldn’t be more excited about the stewardship we’ve cooked up for FY23. We are introducing impactful communications that are new for our shop and invigorating existing initiatives. Remember, no one likes “stale, stagnate, sterile stewardship!” Let’s not just BLOW HOT AIR but make every effort to keep our stewardship fresh and exciting.

Our plans are HEATING UP for a great Team Stewardship next month! Lynnsey Lafayette and our friends in the College of Public Health will share exciting plans for the year and we will discuss managing–or better yet, avoiding–stewardship disasters. Let’s learn from each other ways to stay out of HOT WATER and off the HOT SEAT as we discuss this HOT BUTTON topic!

Thank you to those who have participated in our new stewardship consultations thus far. It seems they are going as smooth as a HOT KNIFE THROUGH BUTTER! A similar effort led to the development and implementation of Team Stewardship seven years ago, and I expect that this survey will lead to PIPING HOT stewardship well into the future. I sincerely appreciate your participation. Elevated stewardship will continue to roll HOT OFF THE PRESSES because of Stewies like you!

Stewardship Spotlight

 Increasing Donor-Scholarship Recipient Interaction

Georgia 4-H

The Georgia 4-H Foundation Scholarship Luncheon was held on June 25 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Donors were given the opportunity to meet their scholarship recipients over a lunch during State Council, a previously existing weekend event for 4-Hers across the state. Students received a certificate, and photos were taken of donors with their recipients. Forty-four scholarships were awarded to incoming freshmen and other classmen attending post-secondary institutions, including universities and technical schools. The scholarships ranged from $500 to $2500.

Stewardship Reporting

FY22 Financial Endowment Reports

Thanks to all who sent in edits of their stewardship recipient lists! Caitlin will reach out to Stewies and Directors of Development later this week to request unit messages and contact information. Contact information will not be printed individually on each report this year, but a link will direct donors to a list of contacts for all units.

For more information, reach out to Caitlin Lacey.

FY22 Faculty Gratitude Reports

Slow and steady wins the race? But we are still hopeful to send these reports in the next month. Thank you for your patience!

Endowment Donor Stories

We are reevaluating the donor story process and would like your feedback! Please send Caitlin examples of ways that you are using donor stories and suggestions of when you’d prefer to ask for these during the gift process.

Scholarships

Scholarship Luncheons

This spring, Lauren Schlesinger hosted two dinners and a lunch that proved collaboration between Honors for the Woodruff Scholarship, Student Financial Aid for the Crawford Scholars, and Gift and Estate Planning for the Woods Scholarship can be a valuable asset! We also started a new annual lunch celebrating the Hoard First Tee Scholarship.

Scholarship events big and small halted in 2020 and 2021, but this pause gave us time to re-evaluate how we interact with scholarship donors. Prior to the pandemic, UGA hosted most of its scholarship engagement in the spring in fairly traditional ways. Consider the following tips for your scholarship donors this year:

  • Move some events to the fall to allow donors to get to know their recipients earlier and foster deeper relationships into the spring.
  • Change a formal lunch scholar meeting to an outside-the-box experience.
  • Continue to use technology that has proven successful when a donor isn’t able to make it to Athens to meet with a recipient in-person.

For more information, reach out to Lauren Schlesinger.

FY22 Scholarship Gratitude Reports

Reports are delayed due to computer issues at the printer. Proofs will be shared with participating units as soon as these are received. We hope to mail these by the end of July.

FY23 Scholarship Gratitude Report Schedule

Reports will go back to a three round process:

  • First round: Collection during fall 2022 and printing in spring 2023
  • Second round: Collection during spring 2023 and printing in May/June 2023
  • Third round: Collection during summer 2023 and printing in fall 2023

An updated Gratitude Report process and timeline documents will be shared with participating units. There is still time to get on board this academic year!

For more information, reach out to Lauren Schlesinger.

Events

PAWS Reception

The Philanthropy at Work Society Reception recognizes UGA faculty, staff, and retirees who gave $1+ to the University during the previous fiscal year and/or have documented a planned gift. This year's event will have a tailgate theme and will include food, fun activities, and remarks from the president. Members of the PAW Society will receive a digital invitation in August.
