Public student loan borrowers who are one year or more behind on payments will be turned over to collections agencies this month. It is the first time since March 2020 that the 5.3 million borrowers in default face collections, which could have devastating consequences, finance professor Nikhil Paradkar told WTOC in Savannah. “Going into collections is a pretty big deal, depending on what scoring model is used,” he said. “It presents about a hundred-point decrease in someone’s credit score immediately, and it takes time to overcome that.”

While the effect of tariffs varies from industry to industry, the recent uncertainty surrounding tariffs is preventing businesses from announcing new economic development projects and will likely stem the tide of companies moving into Georgia this summer, Jeff Humphreys, director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth, told The Augusta Chronicle. “A lot of business decisions, large and small, are on hold until we have a better understanding of what the tariffs set,” Humphreys said. “I don’t think we’ll get a lot of new project announcements. ... A lot of projects will be on hold.”
