IN THE NEWS

Despite national news of tech layoffs and a looming recession, the Atlanta area added 126,400 jobs in 2022. Logistics, hospitality and health care saw some of the biggest jobs gains but even real estate — which has been hit by rising interest rates — saw an increase. “Atlanta has been an economic development success,”UGA Selig Center for Economic Growth director Jeff Humphreys told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It has an educated workforce, it’s an innovation and tech hub and it has higher-than-average population growth. And all those things are related.” While the Selig Center forecasts a financial downturn in 2023, several different Georgia metro areas will be affected differently, and Atlanta is poised to avoid much contraction.

In response to the surge in demand for digital services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, tech companies hired about 10 years worth of new employees in about 18 months. The recent layoff announcements at Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others are signals they overhired, not that they’re in crisis, Terry College MIS professor Jerry Kane told WABE. “We’re just calibrating expectations about what life is going to look like post-pandemic,” Kane said. “During the pandemic, many people were making bets that we weren’t going to leave our houses again, that we’d never go to the gym again, that we’d never go to the movies again — and that’s not proving to be true.” Companies are likely adjusting their hiring to fit that post-pandemic demand.
