The UGA Selig Center for Economic Growth estimates Americans’ disposable income will reach $22.8 trillion by 2026. According to the center’s Multicultural Economy report, this growth relies heavily on a more diverse group of shoppers than in decades past. “As the U.S. consumer market becomes more diverse, advertising, products and media must be tailored to each market segment,” UGA Selig Center director Jeff Humphreys told ADWEEK. The report anticipates $1 out of every $5 of disposable income will belong to a Black, Asian, multiracial or Native American household.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, more moms and caregivers turned to freelance and gig work to continue working while providing care at home. Laura Little, Chick-fil-A Distinguished Professor for Leadership Advancement, told the BBC that women were drawn to this type of work because it provided needed income for their family and allowed them to maintain their professional identities. “They get to have ownership over what they’re doing and when they’re doing it — without having to work full-time when they either don’t want to or can’t,” Little said. The trend benefits caregivers and companies, who gain access to a diverse and flexible pool of employees, she added.
