Fifty-five years ago, Ghertner embarked on his commercial real estate career, working for a real estate developer that moved him into brokerage, then starting his own firm and finally helping found the Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta office in 1977. Since then, he has specialized in representing tenants and users in achieving their office space, business park, and build-to-suit objectives nationally and internationally and has received countless honors for his work. Ghertner is a proud University of Georgia graduate who received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the Terry College of Business in 1965 and is passionate about giving back to his alma mater by serving on the Terry College of Business Alumni Board and having received the Terry College of Business’ Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011.

SCHAKNOWSKIS CREATE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENT VETERANS |
|
|
Heather and BJ Schaknowski share a passion and deep gratitude for the Armed Forces, the University of Georgia, and the business education they received at the Terry College of Business — a combined admiration that has motivated the couple to open pathways for others to experience. Heather (BBA ’99) and BJ (EMBA ’04) have created a $1 million endowment, the Schaknowski Military Appreciation Scholarship Fund, to provide scholarship support in perpetuity for student veterans enrolled in the Terry College. The Stankowskis gift aligns with Terry College Dean Ben Ayers’ commitment to serve veterans pursuing a business education at the graduate and undergraduate levels. “BJ and Heather’s generosity opens the door for more veterans to have the opportunity to develop their career skills after they leave active duty,” said Ayers. “This scholarship helps our veterans with financial needs continue their studies and work toward their chosen professional field.”

Although it was a rainy day, the excitement was not dampened as Terry College celebrated the Godfrey family and their support of the Economics Department at the dedication of the John Munro Godfrey, Sr. Department of Economics, Friday, November 10. Faculty, staff, and students from the Department of Economics gathered with the Godfrey family, President Morehead and Dean Ayers to celebrate this transformational gift. ‘It’s not everyday you see your name in lights’ said Dr. John Munro Godfrey, Sr. as he and his wife, Flavel
, walked in the room where large 4 foot letters spelling GODFREY lit up the area. Dean Ayers shared that “this landmark gift from John and Flavel will accelerate not only our program growth, but also the Department’s influence by supporting faculty research, our academic offerings, scholarships, and outreach. And it helps us to ensure that our students are prepared to confront society’s most pressing social and economic issues.” The occasion wrapped up with President Morehead, Dean Ayers, Department Head Josh Kinsler and the Godfreys all helping to cut the ribbon to commemorate this new beginning.
Dr. John Munro Godfrey, Sr. is a Double Dawg, having graduated from the University of Georgia with a BBA in Economics in 1964 and completing his PhD in Economics in 1976. Dr. Godfrey went on to develop a successful career as a business economist. He held positions with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and Barnett Banks, Incorporated in Jacksonville, Florida, before establishing his own consulting group: Florida Economic Associates. Dr. Godfrey has held leadership roles in several civic and professional organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Business Economists. He is a Past President of the Terry College Alumni Board and was honored with the college’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1994. He also was a member of the Building Terry National Campaign Cabinet, a group that was instrumental in raising the private support to build the Business Learning Community. The Godfreys were inducted into the Terry College’s Pinnacle Society in 2019 and in April of 2023 are being recognized with the Terry College Distinguished Service Award.
The Terry College is grateful to the Godfreys for their partnership and transformative gift to the Department of Economics, which will ensure the department continues to provide outstanding educational opportunities and valuable research in the field of economics for generations to come. |
