Advancing Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

September 28, 2023

From the sounds of the Chapel bell ringing to football games between the hedges, the fall semester has been well underway on the University of Georgia campus.

This month, U.S. News & World Report released their 2024 rankings, placing UGA at No. 20 among the nation’s best public universities. This marks UGA’s eighth consecutive year in the top 20 and illustrates our continued commitment to world-class instruction, student success, and groundbreaking research.

UGA was also ranked No. 9 on the 2024 list of Top Public Universities in the U.S. by ranking platform Niche. This top-10 ranking was the result of Niche’s analysis of academic, admissions, financial and student life data from more than 500 public colleges and state universities. UGA also received top-10 rankings in specific categories including student life, academics, value, diversity and athletics.

This next month is a time of transition in the Provost’s Office. On October 1, Dr. Michelle Cook begins her new role as vice president for student affairs. She will be missed in our office, but I am eager to continue working with her in this new capacity.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Alton Standifer as he joins the Provost’s Office as the new vice provost for inclusive excellence and chief of staff to the provost. In this role he will direct the university’s Office of Institutional Diversity and lead strategic university initiatives, manage special projects and provide oversight for operations and staff in the Provost’s Office.

As we approach the midpoint of this semester, I am grateful to work alongside each of you as we continue to advance excellence in teaching, research and public service.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
