| Progress from the Office of Research: A quick look back and we leap forward
Fourteen months ago, I was appointed as the University of Georgia’s vice president for research. Over these 14 months, my excitement about leading this dynamic and growing research enterprise has only grown. As we dive into another academic year, now is a great time to look back and celebrate our accomplishments, as well as look ahead to goals for 2022-23 and beyond. |

The National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Grant Program will document, interpret and preserve the sites and stories of the full history of the African American struggle to gain equal rights as citizens from the transatlantic slave trade forward.

American Council of Learned Societies Fellowships - Deadline: Sept. 28, 2022

Supports outstanding scholarship in the humanities and interpretive social sciences. In the 2022-23 competition year, ACLS offers these fellowships solely to untenured scholars who have earned their Ph.D. within eight years of the application deadline.
Willson Center Faculty Fellowships - Deadline: Sept. 30, 2022
- Amount: Varies

These fellowships support excellence in arts and humanities research or creative practice and activity at UGA. Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply. Interdisciplinary research or creative practice and activity is encouraged, including with the sciences, social sciences and other domains. Fellowships provide course release from two normally assigned courses in one academic year.
UGA Arts Lab Fellowships - Deadline: Sept. 30, 2022
- Amount: Up to $2,000

Six Arts Lab Faculty Fellowships are available for faculty in the performing or creative arts for academic year 2023-2024. The fellowships are designed for faculty members to develop practice, research and curriculum in the arts. Support comprises one course release.
National Humanities Center Fellowships - Deadline: Oct. 6, 2022

Each year, the NHC welcomes up to 40 scholars from across the humanities and all over the world. During their time in residence, Fellows are given the freedom to work on their projects while benefiting from the services of the center, which include private study space, library services, and administrative support in organizing seminars and study groups.

UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography Director Clark Alexander was voted the 2022-23 president-elect of the Southern Association of Marine Laboratories (SAML), and will serve as president for 2023-2024. |

Samuele Lamon, a doctoral student in the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been selected for the 2022-25 cohort of the Foundation for Food and agriculture Research Fellows program. |

Research Live goes monthly
Research Live is relaunching this fall with a monthly schedule of webinars devoted to topics of wide interest to UGA researchers. These virtual events provide an opportunity for faculty, students and staff to interact directly with OoR professionals on different aspects of conducting research at a large public university. All events are free and open to anyone in the UGA community.
Research Orientation and Town Hall
Join Vice President for Research Karen Burg and Office of Research senior leadership for this year’s Faculty Research Orientation on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 2:30-3:30 p.m., to learn more about how the Office of Research can support your work. Burg will also host a virtual town hall for the UGA research community on Monday, Oct. 24, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., to discuss recent Office of Research accomplishments and new initiatives in support of UGA investigators. Both events require Zoom registration.
Internal communications survey
Last fall, the Office of Research deployed a survey to gauge needs and preferences regarding UGA internal communications related to research. Over the intervening months we have made several changes to our practices (and launched some new ones), and we’d love for you to tell us how we’re doing. The survey should take no more than 5-10 minutes.

Infosession/Q&A with Air Force Office of Scientific Research Program Manager Thursday, Oct. 13, 3-5 p.m. (virtual)
This information session hosted by Georgia State University will introduce faculty to Department of Defense research funding programs such as the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program, the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives and the Defense Enterprise Science Initiative. The event will be hosted on MS Teams, and participants are asked to register via Eventbrite.
Research Live Friday, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. (virtual)
Research Live is the Office of Research’s monthly webinar series. The October program focuses on “Improving community engagement and other goals of UGA’s human research program,” with presenters Kim Fowler, Jessica Lasebikan and Kim Fernandez of the Human Subjects Office. Research Live is free and open to anyone in the UGA community. Zoom registration is required.
