Eight UGA faculty members and administrators earned Fulbright awards for 2026-2027: Samuel Aggrey, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Javad Anjum and Ashley Harrison, Mary Frances Early College of Education; Mark Eiteman, College of Engineering; Baruch Halpern, Franklin College; Sonia Hirt and Katherine Melcher, College of Environment and Design; and Leah Peck, Office of Global Engagement. The recipients will teach, conduct research, and build partnerships across eight countries.

UGA student team wins award in NASA competition
UGA College of Engineering students Jerry Gonzalez, Owen Nesbit, Ishaan Patel, and Quinn Rodier earned NASA’s “Future Game-Changer” award at the 2026 Gateways to Blue Skies Forum. Advised by faculty members Kevin Wu and Ramana Pidaparti, the team developed QuaSAR, a drone-based quantum sensing system designed to identify aircraft defects before visible damage appears. |

SPA announces process, policy improvements
UGA’s Sponsored Projects Administration has announced several changes that will enhance its service regarding setup and management of sponsored projects, including improved Grants Portal tracking, reduced administrative burden for award modifications, and updated policy and guidelines related to graduate assistant tuition. These changes streamline processing, clarify accountability, reduce unnecessary documentation, and improve data quality. Recent and upcoming process and system improvements will continue to be shared through the Office of Research’s Research Improvements and Service Enhancements (RISE) tracker.
New IACUC protocol system launching early 2027
In early 2027, the Office of Animal Care and Use (OACU) will launch a new protocol portal system that streamlines submission of new protocols and reduces the need for revisions. The current system, Artemis, will remain available for submissions until the launch. Once a launch date has been determined, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) will provide guidance on whether researchers should submit new protocols in Artemis or wait to submit in the new system. When does an export control review apply?
Research Security & Export Control reviews are based on the specific technologies, materials, software, data, funding sources, collaborators, and countries involved in a project, not solely its research discipline. Researchers should review the Export Control Decision Tree early in the research process, particularly for projects involving controlled equipment, drones, biological agents, encryption, international shipments, foreign collaborations, publication restrictions, or restricted technical data.
