Robin Buell named 2026 SEC Professor of the Year
Robin Buell, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar Chair in Crop Genomics, has been named the 2026 SEC Professor of the Year, the conference’s top faculty honor. The award recognizes her contributions to plant genomics, education, and service. Poet and scholar Ed Pavlić named a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow Ed Pavlić, Distinguished Research Professor of English and African American Studies, has been named a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow. The prestigious honor recognizes his contributions to the arts and humanities and will support his work on a new biography of James Baldwin, expected to be published in 2028.
Two UGA undergraduates named 2026 Goldwater Scholars
Undergraduates Vaughn Frost and Annie Mehta have been named 2026 Goldwater Scholars, one of the nation’s top honors for students in math, engineering, and the natural sciences. The award recognizes their outstanding undergraduate research and future potential in mechanical engineering and computational astrophysics. |

Open publishing opportunities expand to 9K titles through UGA Libraries contracts
UGA Libraries has expanded its open access publishing agreements after saving researchers more than $2 million in 2025. A new deal with Taylor & Francis increases fee-free publishing opportunities to more than 9,000 journals across 14 publishers, helping UGA scholars share research more widely and making scholarship more accessible to practitioners, policymakers, and the public.
Security alert: Update to Hong Kong National Security Law
As of March 23, it is a criminal offense in Hong Kong to refuse police passwords or decryption assistance to access personal electronic devices, including cellphones and laptops. This legal change applies to everyone, including U.S. citizens, in Hong Kong. In addition, the Hong Kong government has more authority to take and keep any personal devices as evidence to support claims linked to national security offenses.
Research Security and Exports Control announce Baker Logistics as new customs broker
UGA Research Security and Exports Control announced that Baker Logistics has been selected as the university's new customs broker, effective immediately. Baker Logistics will support all import- and export-related clearance activities, ensuring timely processing, improved communication, and full compliance with U.S. customs and international trade regulations. Researchers should begin routing any customs-related inquiries, documentation, or shipment details to Baker Logistics. For questions or information, contact uga@bakerlcs.com.

Grantsmanship Tip of the Month |
Five tips to make the grant writing process manageable • Start early! Three months is not too early for a standard grant; it takes at least six months to develop a competitive proposal for a large, complex, multi-collaborator effort.
• Create a timeline and checklist to make the lift manageable; the Office of Strategic Research Development (OSRD) offers generic tools you can tailor to your specific opportunity. • Create an outline based on the text of the solicitation to ensure you write to all the requirements.
• Recruit readers (both subject-matter experts and scientifically literate lay readers) early and plan to provide drafts long before the deadline. ‘A chance to ring the bell’: How a UGA startup is changing the fight against cancer |
Born from UGA research and personal loss, Annate Bitherapeutics is developing a cancer therapy that uses the body’s innate immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. Cofounders (left to right, above) Eric DeJesus, Stephen Hajduk, and Michael Cipriano have built momentum through grants, startup support, and pitch competitions as they push toward future human trials.
