CAES food scientist named inaugural Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS
Casimir Akoh, Distinguished Research Professor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been named the inaugural Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS. The honor recognizes distinguished individuals for outstanding academic or professional achievements within the ScholarGPS platform.
Branch named National Academy of Inventors Fellow
William “Bill” D. Branch, professor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been elected as Fellow for the National Academy of Inventors. Branch is the 17th UGA faculty member to receive this honor, which recognizes inventors whose innovations have had a significant impact on society, economic development, and quality of life. |

FY 2026 Faculty Seed Grants in the Sciences and Engineering
The Office of Research announces the FY26 Faculty Seed Grants in the Sciences and Engineering to support new research lines lacking current resources. Eligible faculty can apply for funding to generate preliminary data for external grants. Proposals are due by 11:59 p.m. on March 1. Lithium-ion battery safety added to SOP
The UGA Research Safety Committee has updated the Electrical Safety SOP to include guidance on lithium-ion battery use in research spaces. While no specific incidents prompted this addition, the committee recognized the importance of addressing their widespread use. A subcommittee’s review confirmed that following manufacturer recommendations ensures safe use. This update aims to raise awareness and promote best practices for researchers handling lithium-ion batteries. For more information, check out this flyer

CAES plant nematologist Melissa Mitchum and researcher Xunliang Liu have made a significant discovery toward understanding how cyst nematodes co-opt a sugar beet’s vascular system for their own benefit.
