Helping Rural Georgia: Innovations in Community Leadership Initiative |
Carter Rheney of Lee County, Georgia, spends time pondering how he can change young people’s lives for the better and how that will affect their communities. This is a worthy consideration for anyone, especially Carter: he’s an eighth-grade student participating in the Junior Leadership Lee Academy.
“One goal that I have in mind is making a difference in the generation after me. I hope this program is my pathway to changing younger people’s lives,” says Carter. “I should learn how to be respectful, take ownership, be inclusive, have responsibility, and most importantly, have the ability to talk in front of crowds.”
The J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development’s Innovations in Community Leadership Initiative supports programs like the Junior Leadership Lee Academy. Donations from members of the initiative’s advisory board were a large part of its momentum.
Since the initiative’s launch in 2020, it has provided assistance to 21 organizations in 23 counties that are beginning or enhancing their leadership development efforts, and it’s supporting programs that reach leaders of all ages—like Carter. |

Matthew McDaniel Reciprocates the Support He Received |
When Matthew McDaniel (BBA ’21) graduated, he knew private support enhanced his college experience. Giving back to the programs from which he benefitted—like the Terry College Excellence Fund and the J.M. Tull School of Accounting Fund—is a priority for this young alumnus.
“My four incredible years at UGA would not have been possible without donor support—including my most transformative experience of studying and interning abroad in China,” said McDaniel. “UGA engrained in me the importance of service and giving back, and I encourage all alumni and friends who have the ability to give back in any way they can.” |

NYC Dawgs Empower UGA Students’ Big Apple Experiences |
UGA students can participate in more career-focused experiences in New York City thanks to alumni who established a scholarship fund to support students coming to the Big Apple for experiential learning opportunities. The cost of such opportunities can be high, considering travel, accommodation, food, public transportation fares, and more—so the chapter came together to provide for this need out of their love for Georgia.
“Many of us NYC Dawgs have to pinch ourselves that we are living and working in a city that, at a time, only felt possible in a dream,” said Mallory O’Brien (ABJ ’12), president of the UGA New York City Alumni Chapter. “As an alumna in a position of leadership, it feels like my duty to help make the journey from Athens to the Big Apple a little easier for UGA students.”
Patrick Klibanoff (BBA ’14, ABJ ’14), chapter vice president, had a similar motive. “Moving to New York challenged me to leave my comfort zone in unexpected ways and was without a doubt, the best personal and professional decision I’ve made since graduation,” he said. “I chose to help establish this fund to make New York more accessible to students pursuing their dream of moving to the Big Apple.” |

You Have “Georgia On Your Mind” and in Your Ears |
The UGA students behind the podcast, “Georgia On Your Mind,” are getting hands-on experience in podcasting while interviewing business leaders across the state and who attended the university.
“The podcast has not only given us a unique learning opportunity in the realm of podcasting, but it has allowed us to meet and network with professionals and experts that work in a wide variety of industries,” said Erin Riney, one of the podcast’s hosts. “We are proud of what we have accomplished so far!”
Donor support made interview travel possible and assisted in the purchase of technology and production equipment. The first season covers the state’s sports tourism efforts, business development, music scene, and agriculture. |
