Summer 2024

PHILOSOPHY NEWS

Message from the Head

It was an exciting and productive academic year for both students and faculty in the Department of Philosophy. I am especially proud of graduating and award-winning students. (And see below for an article about a recent and impressive performance by our new Ethics Club!)  I am also proud of how active and engaged philosophy faculty have been—giving talks in the US and abroad, winning grants, organizing events, and publishing papers.

I’m thrilled to tell you that major work on Peabody Hall is starting quite soon. I met with a team from the university architect’s office last week to discuss plans. An elevator will be installed in the building, restrooms will be updated and made accessible, and—eventually—our main lecture theater will be reconfigured to make it more usable. I can’t wait to see the results of the project and will be very happy when we will no longer have to reschedule classes because of accessibility issues.

As always, we appreciate your interest in the Department of Philosophy. Please email me at Aaron.Meskin@uga.edu if you have any questions, want to share something about your time at UGA, or would like to arrange a visit. And, as always, Go Dawgs!

News from the Department

SWEET Success

UGA Philosophy assistant professors Jeremy Davis and Youjin Kong organized and led the inaugural Southern Workshop on the Ethics of Emerging Technologies (SWEET) on April 19 and 20 at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Bringing together scholars from throughout Georgia and Florida to discuss cutting-edge research addressing issues related to artificial intelligence, the event was a decided success and hopes are to continue it annually.

Ethics Club Makes Semifinals in National Competition

Congratulations to the undergraduate members of UGA’s Ethics Club, who recently competed in the National Bioethics Bowl in Waco, Texas! The team came in third place, making UGA the highest ranked public university in the tournament. We are extremely proud of these brilliant students as they represented the University of Georgia!

Spring Kleiner Lecture Series

The Scott and Heather Kleiner Lecture Series continued with a diverse schedule of scholars, including UGA alumni Ava Wright, now of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Nastassja Pugliese of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

The March 13 lecture celebrated Women’s History Month, and featured renowned author and feminist scholar Kate Mannee of Cornell University. The series wrapped up with talks from Mouhamadou El Hady of Cheikh Anta Diop University’s Teacher’s College in Senegal and the University of Connecticut, and Clinton Castro of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Co-sponsors for talks this past semester included the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, the Department of Romance Languages, the Institute for Women's Studies, and the Mellon Foundation through a MultiVocal Humanities Grant.

Faculty News

As usual, Department of Philosophy Faculty have remained active with publishing, presenting papers, organizing academic events, and an array of activities throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Undergraduate Student News

The Department of Philosophy saw thirty students graduate in the 2023-24 academic year. We are very proud of these students and know they will find great success in their future endeavors! We also congratulate the 2024 Undergraduate Award winners, who are recipients of several competitive scholarships and awards that are issued by the Department of Philosophy each Spring.

We regularly provide guidance for undergraduates considering philosophy as a major or minor, as well as postgraduate and career advice for philosophy majors. Spring 2024 presentations for undergraduates included “So You Majored in Philosophy: Now What?” and “Why Study Philosophy?”. The department also offered logic tutoring and a new writing clinic. The Department of Philosophy is committed to student success, both during their years at UGA and beyond.
