Advancing Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

October 31, 2023

At the University of Georgia, we are committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for our students, faculty and staff. Earlier this month, UGA received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for the 10th consecutive year. This honor is a testament to the success of university initiatives and programs such as the Georgia Ready Summer Institute, Lead@3 series, Road Dawgs, ALL Georgia program and the Georgia Possible program.

The dedication of UGA’s new Poultry Science Building further reflects our university’s deep commitment to our students and to our state. The $54.1M facility will enhance access and opportunities for faculty, staff and students as they continue to advance poultry research and education while strengthening one of Georgia’s largest industries.

We also received the welcome news of record-breaking UGA enrollment this month. Of the total 41,615 students, there is an all-time high of 32,281 students who are Georgia residents. These students represent 156 of the state’s counties.

As we move into November, it is a time to celebrate the visual, performing and literary arts at UGA with the 12th annual Spotlight on the Arts festival. The richness and diversity of the university’s arts programming and research is on display with more than 60 events and exhibitions throughout the monthlong festival.

Highlights include a performance by seven-time Grammy Award-winner and twice Oscar-nominated film composer Terence Blanchard, a lecture by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead, and a University Theatre production of “Mother Courage and Her Children.” Also featured are a student choreography performance by the department of dance, a night of fine opera by the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and the third annual Dodd Market showcasing more than 90 student artists. Throughout the month, we'll be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Georgia Museum of Art. I hope you’ll join me in engaging with the arts not only in November but also throughout the year.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our teaching, research, and service mission. It is an honor to serve alongside you.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
