Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. October 28, 2021 As part of an effort to facilitate information sharing among academic leaders and business officers, the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration partnered to hold our first Leadership Update on Major Initiatives (LUMI) earlier this week. I am grateful to all of the presenters and to the more than 200 people who attended the meeting. A recording of the meeting can be accessed online.
I have made communications with faculty, academic leaders, staff, and students an important part of my responsibilities. As our institution moves forward in response to revisions to the annual review and post-tenure review policies that the Board of Regents approved on October 13, we remain committed to the principles of transparency and shared governance. To that end, I will soon appoint and charge a faculty working group to develop institutional policy revisions for consideration by the Faculty Affairs Committee and, ultimately, University Council.
This working group will include University Council members representing four committees: the Executive Committee; Faculty Affairs Committee; Committee on Statutes, Bylaws, and Committees; and the Post-tenure Review Appeals Committee. Additional faculty members representing a cross-section of disciplines and campus roles will be included in the working group, as well. Importantly, the idea for this working group has been endorsed by the Faculty Affairs and Executive committees of University Council.
As I mentioned at the LUMI meeting, the University of Georgia community has a lot to be proud of. We are 16th among national public universities in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings, second in the nation for the number of new research-based products developed by industry partners, and have received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for eight consecutive years. In November, the University will celebrate its 10th annual Spotlight on the Arts festival, which underscores the quality of our thriving arts and humanities programs.
Across disciplines, departments, and campuses, a shared commitment to academic excellence defines the University of Georgia. I want to again express my deep appreciation to everyone—faculty, staff, students, and academic leaders alike—for making UGA an extraordinary public research university.
Sincerely, S. Jack Hu Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
