Advancing Excellence: Updates from Benjamin C. Ayers, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

November 6, 2025

As Georgia’s flagship institution of higher education, the University of Georgia is deeply committed to our home state. The university’s initiatives to advance excellence in teaching, research, and service are rooted in our land-grant and sea-grant mission and our focus on serving the state, its communities, and its people.

One of the most fundamental ways we serve Georgia is by providing an exceptional academic experience for the state’s talented students. Our total enrollment reached 43,888 this fall, a 1.7% increase from last year that was driven by a record number of students from Georgia. In-state students now represent 83% of all undergraduates.

Our first-year class of 6,216 students was selected from a record number of applicants with impressive academic credentials. These students represent 142 of Georgia’s 159 counties. Additionally, 3,283 transfer students joined UGA this academic year. Among fall 2025 transfers, 93% are from Georgia, including an increase in the number of students from rural counties. UGA’s approximately 3,200 new graduate students also reflect an increase in the number of Georgia residents pursuing advanced degrees.

These final enrollment figures for fall semester are in line with the university’s strategic enrollment plan, which is designed to align campus resources with student demand.

A key motivator for outstanding students choosing UGA is our exceptional faculty. Through presidential faculty hiring initiatives, UGA continues to bring distinguished educators and researchers to campus while maintaining our 17-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Since 2020, nearly 100 new faculty have joined UGA in a wide range of disciplines.

This semester, we launched a new presidential hiring initiative with a goal of recruiting 60 new faculty to advance our instructional and research priorities. Many of these new positions will build on our strengths in health sciences, while others will continue to expand our expertise in risk, resilience, and sustainability. Additionally, the initiative will help us respond to student demand and advance next-generation research in disciplines such as engineering, data science, data visualization, and artificial intelligence, including AI ethics.

By strategically investing in world-class faculty and applying our resources and expertise to the needs of Georgia communities, the University of Georgia is driving new opportunities for our state and its citizens.

Thank you for your dedication to our great institution and to the people of our state.

Sincerely,

Benjamin C. Ayers

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
