University of Georgia
Building Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

November 30, 2021

We are just one week away from the end of a fall semester that has highlighted continued growth in our capacity to address local and global challenges through research and service while also educating the next generation of leaders. UGA's enrollment has surpassed 40,000 for the first time in our more than 200-year history.

The recent groundbreaking for the new Poultry Science Complex along with the dedication of Interdisciplinary STEM Research Building 1 and the McBee Institute of Higher Education signal our commitment to enabling impactful research and scholarship. Through the Rural Engagement Workshop for Academic Faculty, which has been renewed for its second year, we are connecting faculty expertise to communities across the state to address urgent challenges.

We are enhancing our efforts to promote student success through the new Connect and Complete Persistence Framework, a set of proactive academic policies designed to support students in academic difficulty and provide early intervention. At the graduate level, additional support and funding are available to catalyze the development of new online, in-person, and hybrid programs that fill unmet needs in high-demand fields.

The University’s success in fulfilling its teaching, research, and service missions hinges on its ability to attract and retain extraordinary faculty members. I am especially grateful to Janette Hill, Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee of University Council and Professor in the Mary Frances Early College of Education, and Elizabeth Weeks, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and Charles H. Kirbo Chair in the School of Law, for agreeing to co-chair a 14-member Working Group on Faculty Evaluation Policies and Practices. I encourage faculty and academic leaders to learn more about their critical work and to submit feedback here.

As we prepare for finals and look forward to fall Commencement ceremonies, I want to again express my appreciation to the faculty, staff, and students who are working to create and apply knowledge with impacts extending far beyond our campuses.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
