McBEE INSTITUTE NEWSLETTER

JUNE 2023

Dear Graduates and Friends,

One of the rewarding aspects of working on a campus is the annual cycle of distinctive (and at times bittersweet) phases. As the Georgia heat arrives, we’ve hosted a new summer cohort of Governor's Teaching Fellows, launched our summer classes (including the Executive Ed.D. seminar in Washington, D.C.), and hired new advisers to serve in the Georgia College Advising Corps for the upcoming academic year.

We also have had to say farewell to recent graduates and to George Spencer, who are off to new opportunities, building on what they learned and the enduring relationships forged during their time at the Institute.

The many outstanding people who have come through Meigs Hall undeniably contribute to our strong reputation in the field. I’m sure that we all share some reservations about the assumptions and methods of the various college rankings, but we still want to note that the Institute’s graduate programs were once again recognized in the top 10 by US News & World Report.

Far more than rankings, your service as our ambassadors is essential and appreciated. As we enter a season of student recruitment, we value your engagement with prospective students. If you know of someone who is ready to pursue a doctoral degree, we invite you to request a recruitment cookie box to start a conversation about the special people and unique attributes of our programs.

With gratitude,
Jim Hearn

Interim Director and Professor of Higher Education

Support Our Students & Programs

Gifts to the McBee Institute directly support our students and outreach programs. Four of our funds support student research. Below is an introduction to our 2022/2023 Thomas G. Dyer Research Award recipient Sean Baser.

Sean Baser (left) accepts award from Erik Ness (right).

Sean Baser is a fifth year PhD candidate who came to the Institute by way of Texas and Oklahoma. His major professor Erik Ness said that he could see Dr. Dyer and Sean trading stories about higher education and a range of topics on the midwestern plains.

Erik described Sean as impressive, not only for his productivity and ingenuity, but also the ease and energy that he brings to every project and conversation. The two have collaborated on several projects. Most recently they compiled a landmark examination of how each state reviews and credentials postsecondary institutions.
