Advancing Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

March 31, 2025

Today marks the beginning of Honors Week, a cherished tradition at the University of Georgia. Ceremonies throughout the week will highlight excellence across UGA’s tripartite mission of teaching, research and service. I invite you to join me in celebrating the extraordinary achievements of the students, faculty, staff and alumni who make up our world-class institution.

Building upon our university’s long-standing commitment to excellence and recent investments in data science and artificial intelligence, UGA is joining the NextGenAI consortium. This exciting partnership with 14 other leading research institutions and technology company OpenAI will support the discovery and development of new applications for AI and provide students with hands-on experience working with the technology.

Joining UGA as founding members of the consortium are public institutions such as the University of Michigan and the California State University system. The consortium also includes private institutions CalTech, Duke University, Harvard University, Howard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Other partners include the University of Oxford, Sciences Po and Boston Children’s Hospital.

One of the most critical roles our university can fill is to bring together leaders from industry, government, education and other sectors to address our state’s greatest challenges and opportunities. More than 200 people gathered on campus last week for the fourth annual UGA Electric Mobility Summit, an event that highlighted collaborative opportunities to support electric and future mobility. The summit was organized by the Georgia Network for Electric Mobility, a university-wide initiative focused on electric mobility and transportation innovation, research and economic development around the state and beyond.

Our university’s growing reputation for excellence is reflected in the record 48,000 applications for the Class of 2029. From this pool, more than 15,800 students were accepted for the upcoming fall semester. These students hold superior academic records, with the middle 50% reporting a GPA of 4.08-4.35; an ACT score of 30-34; an SAT score of 1300-1470; and 8-14 AP, IB or dual enrollment courses.

Now that spring has arrived and we are moving toward our spring Commencement ceremonies, I want to thank you for everything you do to make UGA such a special community.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
