Advancing Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

March 31, 2022

As we prepare to celebrate Honors Week next month, I want to extend my thanks to all of the outstanding members of the campus community who make the University of Georgia one of America’s leading public universities.

Honors Week is a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and recognizes the accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This year the Provost’s Office will award the inaugural University of Georgia Award for Excellence in Teaching, which was created based on a recommendation of the UGA Teaching Academy and recognizes faculty whose time is primarily dedicated to instruction. This new award joins the longstanding Russell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Meigs Professorship, the University’s highest teaching honor.

Two distinguished faculty members—Dr. Michael Bartlett and Dr. Libby Morris—were recently named University Professor for their significant impact on our institution. UGA’s latest Regents’ Professors, Dr. John Drake and Dr. Claudio Saunt, will discuss their innovative and pace-setting scholarship during the 2022 Charter Lecture on April 11.

The Office of Research and Public Service and Outreach will recognize exemplary scholarship and service through a number of awards next month, as will the UGA Alumni Association and other units.

Just yesterday, it was announced that Dr. J. Marshall Shepherd—who last year was recognized with election to the National Academy of Engineering, election to the National Academy of Sciences, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences—was named SEC Professor of the Year.

As an institution, we are working to enhance our culture of celebrating and promoting the accomplishments of faculty. I encourage you to pursue institutional honors, as well as national and international awards that align with your career stage and achievements.

The outstanding faculty of the University of Georgia exemplify academic excellence. As Provost, I want to ensure that your accomplishments are recognized, both here at UGA and beyond.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
