Advancing Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

January 31, 2023

As we celebrate the back-to-back national championships in college football, UGA also has much to celebrate on the academic front. We have reached a historic milestone by surpassing a half-billion dollars in research and development spending in fiscal year 2022. The total expenditures of $545.6 million, $51.7 million more than the previous year, are also the largest single-year increase in our recent history. It is the first time since FY2017 that the University of Georgia’s research and development expenditures have grown more than 10% in a single year.

This growth is a result of UGA’s strategic investments to expand research infrastructure and recruit world-class faculty via targeted hiring initiatives in areas including environmental science, brain and behavioral health, security and integrative precision agriculture. Not only have the results been noticeable in R&D expenditures during FY2022, but they have also been evident over the past nine years as the university’s expenditures have increased by nearly 58% during that time period.

These R&D expenditures reflect the tireless work that our faculty has devoted to further develop their research, cultivate industry partnerships and secure external funding.

Continuing in this pursuit of knowledge, thought leaders in diverse fields including history, government, business, higher education and the arts and sciences will share their expertise and insights with the campus community during the spring 2023 Signature Lecture Series. I hope you’ll join me in learning from these nationally renowned scholars, leaders and innovators.

Also upcoming is our Active Learning Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., February 14 at the Tate Student Center. This summit will give instructors a chance to practice new active learning techniques as well as examine the positive impact that active learning is having on student success. More details about the summit and the link to register are available online.

With the spring semester well underway, I am grateful for your leadership, service and commitment as we continue to pursue excellence as a campus community.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
