Building Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

January 31, 2022

The University of Georgia has kicked off 2022 with several accomplishments and exciting initiatives that demonstrate our shared commitment to excellence in all that we do.

Our online graduate programs were ranked third in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and three of our outstanding faculty members were elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in recognition of their distinguished achievements. Earlier this month we launched an Electric Mobility Initiative with seed funding over the next five years to initiate new educational programs, research, and outreach.

To help communities address urgent challenges and take a proactive approach to improving quality of life, President Morehead announced the new Connected Resilient Communities program during the 2022 State of the University Address. He also noted that the combined economic impact of our teaching, research, and service missions on the state of Georgia continues to grow, reaching a record $7.4 billion in 2021.

Several new programs and initiatives announced by President Morehead will help further elevate the learning environment for our undergraduate and graduate students. As the focus of our Quality Enhancement Plan, UGA will launch a five-year, $6 million initiative in Fall 2022 to increase the use of active learning. President Morehead also announced an initiative to recruit 20 new faculty members and eight academic advisors in fields experiencing rapid enrollment growth. At the graduate level, a new seminar series known as GradFIRST will provide first-year students with professional development and networking opportunities. A fundraising initiative supported by $1 million in matching funds from the UGA Foundation Board of Trustees will create more endowed scholarships for extraordinary graduate students. Several other important investments in the future of our institution were announced during the address, and I encourage you to view it if you haven't already.

And who can forget that January brought a national football championship that demonstrated the talent and tenacity of our student-athletes? Whether on the gridiron or in the classroom, lab, performance hall, or studio, members of the University of Georgia community are defined by their commitment to excellence. Thank you for your dedication, and best wishes for a successful Spring Semester.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
