Legacy of Edith House enriched by Hendersons

Dear alumni, alumnae and friends,

I am pleased to share that 1976 University of Georgia School of Law graduates James L. “Jim” Henderson III and Eleanor “Elsie” Dunlap Henderson have made a $250,000 pledge to support scholarships in memory of Edith House, one of the law school’s first female graduates.

“We believe that financial assistance is so important in attracting the very best students to Georgia Law, and it is equally important to enable graduates to pursue their career passions without incurring burdensome student debt,” they said. “As a family with three women who graduated from Georgia Law it is a privilege to continue to support women law students through the Edith House Fund.”

Edith House, co-valedictorian of the Class of 1925, enjoyed a distinguished career in public service spanning more than 30 years. In 1931, she was appointed as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida and received an outstanding service citation in 1955. In 1963, she became the first woman U.S. attorney for the state of Florida.

The new scholarships will be awarded to individuals reflecting the values of Edith House and/or those who seek to further the advancement of women in the legal profession.

Edith House  (LL.B.'25)

I am grateful to Jim and Elsie for their longtime commitment and dedication to the School of Law. It is wonderful to see them strengthen the legacy of Edith House. She was not only an accomplished lawyer and public servant but also a trailblazer. As the School of Law seeks to redefine what it means to be a great national public law school, these scholarships will play an essential role in making a first-rate legal education more accessible to those who will follow in her footsteps to become future leaders for state and society.

Sincerely,

Peter B. "Bo" Rutledge
Dean and Talmadge Chair of Law

Your continued support is an important part of the School of Law's success.
