Students cover the world’s largest sporting event

For 24 Grady College students, summer 2026 meant traveling across North America using skills they learned in the classroom to report on the world’s largest sporting event, the FIFA World Cup. As credentialed journalists, the students published photos, videos, blogs and stories for two of the largest media organizations in the country: USA Today and The Associated Press, which also serves a worldwide audience.
Grady College students covered three knockout-round matches and 18 group-play matches in Miami, Vancouver, Mexico City, Seattle, and Monterrey, Mexico. Each group of students was accompanied by a faculty member who served as a mentor and liaison with the media outlets. The students spent nearly three weeks covering the matches, fan experience, culture and more. |

Changemaker Award established |
Grady College invites nominations for the inaugural Charlayne Hunter-Gault Changemaker Award.
The award is named for alumna Charlayne Hunter-Gault, who, together with Hamilton Holmes, broke barriers as one of the first Black students at the University of Georgia. It honors communications leaders whose courage and determination have created lasting, positive change. The award recognizes individuals whose actions demonstrate the profound impact one person can have in advancing progress and shaping a better future. Professionals in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications or any related field who have had an impact on those industries are eligible for nomination.

Alumni, faculty and students take part in film festival |
For two years, the Athens Film Festival (ATHFF), founded by Chuck Griffin (ABJ '09), has elevated and propelled local films and filmmakers by exhibiting work to an engaged audience, providing a space to exchange ideas, network with both professionals and colleagues, and gain insight into current trends in the entertainment industry.
The festival, sponsored by the college and the Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media program, featured more than 100 film screenings across four days and five venues. Many students, faculty and alumni presenting film screenings and participated in panels during the festival.
