Advancing Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

February 28, 2022

For the past several years, I’ve been sharing monthly updates on academic initiatives and accomplishments with campus leaders through this newsletter. In the interest of sharing information and accolades more broadly, this and future editions of the Advancing Excellence newsletter also will be shared with all our faculty members.

The instruction and mentorship that faculty members provide enable our students to succeed at the highest levels, whether competing for international scholarships or starting businesses after graduation. To expand mental health and well-being support for students, President Morehead recently dedicated $1 million in private funds over the next two years.

Our faculty continue to receive recognition for their work, with recent honors that include the Newcomb Cleveland Prize from AAAS and the election of three faculty as Senior Members of the National Academy of Inventors. Our Public Service and Outreach faculty play a critical role in supporting workforce development across the state and connecting UGA with local communities.

The Working Group on Faculty Evaluation Policies and Practices that I appointed in response to changes in University System of Georgia Board of Regents policies and guidance is making significant progress. I recently expanded the working group to include a total of 25 faculty and academic leaders. They are working in five subgroups charged with updating our policies and guidelines for annual evaluations, post-tenure review, review of administrators, promotion and tenure, and due process. I encourage you to learn more about their important work and to provide feedback through this website.

The University of Georgia community is defined by a shared commitment to excellence in our teaching, research, and service missions. Thank you for your dedication to this institution. I look forward to sharing additional updates with you in the months ahead.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
