Fall Newsletter 2024

From the Desk of Aaron Meskin

Dear Friends of the Department,

I’m writing you at the end of a great fall semester here at UGA’s Department of Philosophy. Our Kleiner Lecture Series has been one of the highlights so far! We were especially happy to host our alumnus and Double Dawg, Professor Adam Cureton, for a lecture on Kantian ethics—to read more about his time at UGA, be sure to check out his alumni feature in the newsletter below.

We are sad to see Dr. Youjin Kong leave us for a position at Seoul National University after just one year at UGA, although we are happy that she is able to return to her alma mater. Dr. Kong made numerous contributions to the department during her short time here, and she will be missed. We are, however, glad to report that a replacement position was authorized, and we are in the process of hiring a new faculty member with a specialty in AI and Data Ethics.

With the department's new courses in applied ethics, advanced topics in bioethics and a minor in bioethics, we are poised to make an even a bigger contribution to the study of ethics—especially bioethics, at UGA. The development of a medical school at the university has elevated this priority for the university, college and department.

Lastly, I want to note two recent gifts to the department. These have enabled us to start two funds: the Scott Kleiner Fellowship in Philosophy Fund, which provides support for Philosophy graduate students, and the Woodall Family Philosophy Fund, which provides more general support for the Department of Philosophy. We want to thank our donors for their generosity!

We appreciate your interest in the University of Georgia’s Department of Philosophy. Please reach out to me at Aaron.Meskin@uga.edu if you have any questions or want to share any career accomplishments or something about your time at UGA.

As always, Go Dawgs!

We are particularly proud of PhD student Alex Asay  who was awarded a UGA Foundation Scholarship through the Student Veterans Resource Center upon his return from a six-month deployment overseas.
