2021 | Welcome Back! Fall 2021 Orientation
New MSW and MA NML students participate in the annual Social Justice Common Book Initiative (SJCBI). For a third year, incoming students arrived at orientation with an eagerness to discuss the book. The SSW's timely and thought-provoking book selections have been inspired by socio-political topics in the last three years including how to have critical dialogue on difficult topics (We Need to Talk in 2019), voting (Give Us the Ballot in 2020), and the “economics of racism” (The Sum of Us in 2021).
Here we are, back for Academic Year 2021-2022. It is a fall of new beginnings and of transitions, with new people and new roles. We hope for a fall where all are safe and well, and where we can continue our good work to promote well-being and social justice through our teaching, research, and service.
The most exciting part of any new academic year is meeting our new students. This year we have wonderful cohorts, who we welcomed during orientations throughout early August. This year we are greeting 104 new students to our MSW Athens full-time program, 36 to our MSW Athens Advanced Standing program, 49 to our Gwinnett extended-time MSW program, 5 to our Gwinnett MSW Advanced Standing program, and 34 to our MSW Online program. In addition, we welcome four new PhD students, 16 new BSW students, and 18 MA in Nonprofit students. It is a full house and we are happy to have each student join our community.
We also welcome Evonne Jones as a new Academic Profession in our Field Education team. Evonne will be working with our BSW students and our online MSW students in their field placements. We also have two new people in our Center for Human Trafficking Research and Outreach (CenHTRO), Rebecca Poon and Anna Cody. Welcome all!
This summer has also seen a number of farewells and transitions to new roles. Shari Miller, who has served as Associate Dean for six years, was selected to be the new dean at Stony Brook University’s School of Social Work. We miss her and wish her all the best in her new role. Our Interim Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs is Joon Choi . She had served as PhD Director, and that role is being taken on by Tiffany Washington. Finally, Tiffany’s role as coordinator for the MSW/MDiv program has been assumed by Michael Robinson. It has been a bit of “musical chairs,” but everyone is settling in and doing an amazing job in their new positions.
I hope each of you has had a safe and restful summer, and are looking forward to a calm and healthy fall. It would be lovely for our paths to cross this year. Please let us know if you would ever like to come to the School for a visit—either in person or virtually (we have gotten quite good at virtual tours!)
Warmly, Anna M. Scheyett Dean and Professor
