Welcome to the December e-newsletter NMI students thrive in UGA Innovation District
Students in the New Media Institute certificate program, Emerging Media graduate students and Talking Dog Agency are working with Metropolis, a start-up in the UGA Innovation District.
The Innovation District is an initiative by the University of Georgia to foster innovation, entrepreneurship and learning. Among the goals of the program are a focus on increasing university and industry collaboration, while providing experiential learning opportunities for students.
NMI certificate students serve as interns for Metropolis while the Emerging Media team works on SEO, UX design and website marketing. Additionally, a new partnership has recently started with Grady’s Talking Dog, a student-run advertising and public relations agency, which is helping Metropolis with brand messaging, ad placements and product trials.
The New Media Institute is a partner organization with the Innovation District. Chris Gerlach, an academic professional with NMI, serves on the Innovation District Advisory Council.
Mattison premieres short film
“AMERICAN Triptych,” a new short film from Booker T. Mattison, assistant professor of Entertainment and Media Studies, premiered earlier this month.
This short film is a triptych, meaning it is three separate works of art that are unified by a common theme. The commonality in this triptych is Covid-19. The film features three narrative chapters. Each highlights a different protagonist — one white American, one Asian-American and one African-American. Through those lenses, the film explores a variety of issues, all amid the Covid-19 pandemic in the summer of 2020.
“AMERICAN Triptych” is a group effort of faculty, alumni and current students. The film gave UGA students an opportunity to work on a professional production with award-winning filmmakers.
New Athens studio provides opportunities for students
Athena Studios, a new $60 million sound stage development in Athens, is set to have a huge impact on film production in Georgia, as well as our students. The developer of Athena Studios, Reynolds Development, enlisted the help of Talking Dog Agency to oversee its recent ground-breaking announcement and marketing efforts.
When the studio opens in 2022, EMST students will have exclusive use of one of the studios for five years. The studio space will be a custom-built, 14,600-square-foot sound stage for film and television production. Features include a 28-foot ceiling and double-truck doors allowing for a vehicle as large as a semi-truck to deliver sets and equipment to the studio.
