Advancing Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

December 16, 2024

The fall 2024 semester has come to a close at the University of Georgia, and I hope you will join me in celebrating the accomplishments of our 3,206 fall graduates. The newest UGA alumni, including 1,773 undergraduates and 1,433 graduate students, were honored at Commencement ceremonies last week. It is a privilege to serve at this institution and witness how UGA students succeed at high levels thanks, in large part, to the dedication of our talented faculty and staff.

We are also celebrating the welcome news that the UGA School of Medicine recently submitted its official application for accreditation to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. This is a significant step in the school’s ongoing development toward training future physicians and eliminating barriers to health care access throughout the state.

Finding innovative solutions is a defining characteristic of UGA’s research excellence. Congratulations to Blake Billmyre, assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy and College of Veterinary Medicine, who received a $2.2 million New Innovator Award from the National Institutes of Health. As a fungal pathogen expert, he will study how the fungus cryptococcus has become a threat to human health and provide data that may inform better treatments.

Congratulations to the UGA football team for its successful 2024 season, including a thrilling victory over the University of Texas in the SEC Championship Game. The Bulldogs have earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming College Football Playoff.

The success that the UGA community has celebrated this past year would not have been possible without your ongoing commitment to the university’s mission. You are the heart at UGA, and I am grateful for all you do to advance excellence in your classrooms, laboratories and offices.

May you all have a great holiday season!

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
