Building Excellence: Updates from S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

December 16, 2021

The University will celebrate the accomplishments of more than 3,200 undergraduate and graduate students during Commencement ceremonies on Friday, Dec. 17th while also celebrating record levels of student success across the board.

The University’s six-year completion rate is now a record 88%, which is just below the 89% average completion rate for our aspirational institutions and well above the average completion rate for peer institutions. Our four-year completion rate is a record 72%, up from 63% a decade ago.

Successes such as these are the result of the dedication of faculty and staff, as well as investments in reducing class sizes and the creation of tailored programs for students, including the ALL Georgia Program and the Georgia Commitment Scholarship Program. In recognition of the critical role that quality advising plays in helping students stay on track toward graduation, President Morehead, Vice President Shrivastav and I recently announced a new three-tier career ladder promotion and compensation structure for academic advisors.

Our students are succeeding at record levels, and our faculty continue to receive national recognition. Earlier this month three faculty members—Anumantha Kanthasamy, Ed Law, and Scott NeSmith—were elected Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. The recent dedication of the Delta Innovation Hub exemplifies this institution’s commitment to helping even more students and faculty turn their ideas into solutions to the challenges facing society.

During this holiday season and throughout the year, our Public Service and Outreach units are helping support businesses—both here in Athens and beyond—while also promoting leadership development and helping communities thrive.

As the semester and the calendar year draw to a close, the University of Georgia community has so much to be proud of. Thank you all for your dedication to this institution, and best wishes for 2022.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

RESEARCH

Thinking big: Using AI to manage natural resources

Can we use data to predict the future? In a way, yes—and it’s already happening. To understand how windstorms might affect a tree stand or how wildlife populations are changing, our crystal balls are less cloudy thanks to artificial intelligence.
