March 2024

The Pulse: Development & Alumni Relations Newsletter

March was action-packed and I cannot thank you all enough for the hard work, which launched us past $200 million in Q3 for only the third time in UGA history. We hosted Georgia Women Give donors in Athens, we inspired thousands of supporters to participate in a record-breaking Dawg Day of Giving, and we learned more about dashboards from Advancement IT and the School of Medicine from Dean Shelley Nuss. And that just scratches the surface.

For those taking time for local spring breaks, please enjoy some R&R. And thank you all in advance for your hard work as we finish FY24 strong!

Fundraising Update

Alumni Participation Rate (APR)

March is one of the busiest months for APR with Dawg Day of Giving, Senior Signature and the Hartman Fund deadline, so we'll have more details soon on where we stand with this metric. We are still pacing to achieve our goal of 15% by the end of FY24. Questions? Email Heather Duiser.

Overall Fundraising Totals

On Friday, we were pleased to share that we reached $200 million during Q3 for only the third time in UGA history — and now we have surpassed $211 million! We are at 96 new endowed scholarships in FY24 (our goal is 100), and we are at 372 total faculty endowments on campus (our goal is 400). Questions? Email Jeremy Ransom.

After-Hours Parking

UGA Transportation & Parking Services offers students, faculty and staff free parking on campus after 6 p.m. regardless of the location of your permit or even if you do not have a permit. Vehicles must be registered with UGA to access these after-hours locations and avoid unintended fines. Registration is free, ensures that you are affiliated with UGA, and does not require you have a parking permit. Register your vehicle at tps.uga.edu and click on “Register for Parking” at the top of the page.

Senior Signature Deadline Extended to April 7

The 2024 Senior Signature campaign deadline was March 31. The Student Engagement team has elected to extend the deadline to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 to give those students who missed the deadline one last chance to make their $30 donation. A final email to all students will be sent April 4; it will include an invitation for those students who have already donated to confirm the spelling of their name on the plaque.

Please share this news with all undergraduate or graduate students who earn a degree at any point in 2024 and encourage them to donate ASAP. The Senior Signature Digital Toolkit has a slate of assets you can use for this purpose. Questions? Contact Terrance Smith.

Class of 2023 Career Outcomes

Among those grads, 64% were employed full-time; 23% were continuing their education; and 9% were engaged in post-graduate internships, fellowships, residencies, postdoctoral research, part-time jobs or said they were not currently seeking employment. His nominators shared that "Griffin's exemplary leadership skills are evident in his role as a key member of our creative team interns. One of the UGA Core Competencies is 'Leadership and Collaboration,' and Griffin has not only embraced this competency but has become a shining example of it." Congrats to Griffin and thanks to everyone who nominated a student for this recognition.

Dawg Day of Giving Recap

Thanks again to everyone in DAR for their role in our epic Dawg Day of Giving last week. We secured a record 11,711 gifts totaling $13,824,735.14 (also a record!), including $3.7 million in commitments for the School of Medicine.

As you continue to share results and thank donors, a few housekeeping reminders:

  • Share the official news release in social. You can use the Digital Toolkit for editorial and visual assets to support your messages.
  • A thank you email went to donors last week; a postcard (with DDOG swag) will be mailed in the next few weeks. Please continue to thank your area's donors, too.
  • Please remove window clings, yard signs and other signage from campus.

Continue to send questions to Sherry Abrams.

? Ring the Bell ?

Suzy and Ron Deering recently met their Georgia Commitment Scholarship recipient thanks to Caitlin Lacey and Graff Wilson arranging the meeting, Siara Abdulla working with Suzy on her giving plans, Jennifer Hancock and Erica Owensby for executing the GCS fund agreement, and to the leadership of Brittany Rider. A true team effort! The Deerings are PLC and Magill Society members, and GCS donors. Suzy is also a Georgia Women Give founding donor.

Debbie Daniel in the Morehead Honors College kindly informed colleague Suzanne Griffeth in FACS about the recent promotion of alumnus Jeremy Burch. Suzanne used that information to send a special "FACS Congrats Card" that was signed by Dean Z and others in the office. You can see Jeremy's reaction here, which reflects a new engagement opportunity for this alumnus. Great collaboration, Debbie and Suzanne!

LaRisa Chambers and Sarah Baines collaborated on a $50k gift from Susanna Mesa of Malibu, California, to establish a graduate fellowship in SPIA that will be matched 1:1 by the UGA Foundation. The fellowship will focus on advancing women in public service and politics, which reflects one of Dean Auer's top priorities. This is Susanna's second major gift to SPIA; her first helps students with financial need participate in internships in D.C. and elsewhere. She is the SVP for Strategy & Operations at Prothena Corporation and serves on SPIA's Board of Advisors. She will host a lunch for Malibu-area alumnae in April and a second event at her home in Montana this summer — she just keeps on giving! Great job, LaRisa and Sarah!

A strong partnership between the Office of Business Engagement and the College of Engineering resulted in some great news mid-March: Cox Automative has made a significant gift to UGA to help spearhead efforts to make electric mobility accessible to all Georgia citizens and establish the state as a global leader in electric mobility innovation. Congrats to Stacy Stanford, Jan Blaine, Engineering Dean Donald Leo and Jordan DeRosa for all of their hard work. Read more.
