Despite the waning focus on pandemic restrictions and precautions, white-collar workers still spend about 30 percent of the time working from home. It’s going to take more than the status-quo to lure them back to the office, MIS professor Jerry Kane told The Observer last month. Hybrid workplaces are becoming standard, and the challenge facing employers is enticing workers into the office. Perks such as free food can help but being in the office also needs to make sense for the workflow. “Employees are happy to go to the office, and actually want to go to the office, when there is the opportunity to be productive and be together,” Kane said.

This summer, workers such as baristas and minor league baseball players voted to unionize. Matt Knepper, assistant professor of economics at the Terry College, explained the rapid pace of unionization in non-traditional sectors is due in part to the historically tight labor market. “There is a resurgence and renewed interest in unionization,” Knepper told The Georgia Recorder shortly before the MLBPA recognized the minor league players’ union. “The labor market is historically tight right now, in spite of the Federal Reserve’s action on interest rates. In the aggregate job reports, the job growth doesn’t seem to have slowed substantially.”
