After a summer of uncertainty in 2020, many of our students had the opportunity to participate in internships, either remote or in person, this summer. Our InternViews series gave students a chance to describe their summer internship experience. This series was coordinated and produced by Sam Perez, the 2021 summer Yarbrough-Grady Fellow in the College’s Communications office. ![]() Partnership established with The Bitter Southerner
We are proud to partner with The Bitter Southerner to provide opportunities for our students. Undergraduate students will team with Bitter Southerner staff on podcast productions and exclusive internships. Stories from MFA students will be shared online and in the print edition.
The Bitter Southerner is a platform for regional narrative journalism that enjoys a national reputation. Readers have enjoyed it on a website platform since it started in 2013. The Bitter Southerner issued its first print publication in Spring 2021.
Grady alumni Kyle Tibbs Jones (ABJ ’85) and Eric NeSmith (ABJ ’02) are partners in the publication. Jones co-founded the publication in 2013 and currently serves as its media director. NeSmith has served as the publication’s publisher for the last five years.
The Bitter Southerner was founded by Chuck Reece (ABJ '94).

Our annual high school camp didn't look the same this year but thirty-four students from around the country studied media and completed specialized portfolio projects over three sessions virtually this summer.
Alumni played an integral role in its success. Tom Cullen (MA ‘18, MFA ‘21), Charlotte Norsworthy (AB ‘19, MA ‘20), and Emily Minnick (AB ‘21) taught sessions. Stephanie Moreno (ABJ ‘06, MA ‘20), assisted with all sessions.
Tori McElhaney (AB ‘18), Kelsey Russo (AB ‘19), Becca Wright (AB ‘19), Angela Alfano (ABJ ‘10), Anna Kate Newall (AB ‘20), Anne Noland (ABJ ‘15), Marquan Norris (AB ‘21), Dayne Young (ABJ ‘11), Deja White (ABJ ‘17) and Dugan Bridges (ABJ ‘06) all gave insights on their careers as guests in various sessions.
