Advancing Excellence: Updates from Benjamin C. Ayers, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

April 30, 2026

As the spring semester draws to a close, we arrive at one of the most meaningful moments in the academic year. Commencement is fast approaching—a time of celebration, reflection and pride for the entire University of Georgia community.

Undergraduate Commencement will take place on Friday, May 8, in Sanford Stadium, and Graduate Commencement will be held on Thursday, May 7, in Stegeman Coliseum. In addition, schools and colleges across the university will honor their graduates through convocation ceremonies, celebrating the culmination of years of dedication and hard work.

To our graduating students: congratulations on this achievement. You leave the University of Georgia prepared not only with knowledge and skills, but also with the values of curiosity, service and leadership that define this institution. I also extend my thanks to our faculty and staff, whose commitment as teachers, mentors and advisors has guided our students at every stage of their journey. Your impact reaches far beyond the classroom, and commencement is a shared celebration of that collective effort.

This month brought important news about the continued growth of UGA’s academic enterprise. We are deeply grateful for the transformative gift from Doug Ivester and the Ivester Foundation in support of the new University of Georgia School of Nursing, which will be named in honor of Victoria Kay Ivester. This investment strengthens our capacity to educate the next generation of nurses, expand research and clinical partnerships, and serve the health needs of communities across Georgia. It represents a powerful vote of confidence in UGA’s mission and reflects the essential role nursing plays in health care.

On April 27, we gathered for our annual Promotion and Tenure Recognition Reception, an opportunity to formally honor faculty members who have achieved this significant milestone. Promotion and tenure represent sustained excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service, and I extend my congratulations to all who were recognized. Your achievements elevate our institution and inspire students, colleagues and peers alike.

I also look forward to our upcoming Staff Appreciation Celebration on May 19 in Stegeman Coliseum. This event provides a meaningful opportunity to recognize and thank the dedicated staff members who keep our university running each day. Their expertise, professionalism and commitment are essential to fulfilling our academic mission, and we are deeply grateful for their hard work and service.

As the semester concludes, I wish you all a strong finish and a moment to reflect on the many accomplishments we share. Thank you for everything you do for the University of Georgia.

Sincerely,

Benjamin C. Ayers

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
