UGA Commemorates 60th Anniversary of Desegregation

On Jan. 9, 1961, Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes made history when they became the first Black students to attend the University of Georgia. Their steadfast resolve to attend class at UGA  broke down barriers, opened the door to progress and created opportunities for generations to come by desegregating the university.

The College will host several events in association with the 60th Anniversary of Desegregation. Grady Newsource has produced a half-hour documentary about the impact of Hunter-Gault and Holmes that is expected to air in February. On Feb. 4 at 4 p.m., Grady will sponsor a virtual Campus Read event hosted by the UGA Press and featuring author Calvin Trillin. Trillin is the author of “An Education in Georgia: Charlayne Hunter, Hamilton Holmes, and the Integration of the University of Georgia,” and the conversation will be moderated by Valerie Boyd, the Charlayne Hunter-Gault Distinguished Writer in Residence and Grady faculty member.

New year brings retirements

Decades of groundbreaking thought and research, student impact and strategic programming are the legacies of Peggy Kreshel, William E. Lee and Parker Middleton who retired Dec. 31, 2020.

Peggy Kreshel joined the Department of Advertising and Public Relations in 1986 and has taught hundreds of students about media history, ethics, gender issues and women’s studies and culture.

A faculty member for for 42 years, Professor Bill Lee has taught thousands of Grady College students. Lee made the intimidating subject matter of Communication Law accessible to students and is frequently cited by alumni as one of the most valuable classes because so many concepts are used after graduation.

Parker Middleton is stepping down from her post as Grady’s Executive Senior Director of Strategy and Engagement after more than two decades of service in administrative leadership and teaching roles at UGA and Grady College.
