Fall 2021 Campus Update
COVID-19 Vaccine Panel Discussion Glen Nowak, PhD, from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication moderated a panel of medical experts from the Augusta University, UGA Medical Partnership for a discussion about the COVID-19 vaccine's benefits, and why our community should consider getting vaccinated. Drs. Jean Chin, Nick Fox, John Francis and Farris Johnson joined us from their homes and workplaces outside of their workday to share in this conversation.
Notifications to Employees Affected by the Federal Vaccine Mandate Underway The University of Georgia has begun notifying employees who are covered by the federal vaccine mandate via email as of Friday, October 29, 2021.
Notifications are being made on a rolling basis as we identify covered individuals. As indicated in the October 26 Archnews, “covered contractor employee” is a term that is broadly defined under the federal government’s Safer Federal Workforce Task Force Guidance (the “Federal Guidance”), and covered contractor employees are required to be vaccinated. More information about the definition of a covered contractor employee can be found here and in the FAQs.
Please monitor your email to see if you are affected.
If you know that you meet the definition of a covered contractor employee, you do not need to wait for notification from UGA. If you are not already vaccinated, you can go ahead and schedule your vaccine appointment or seek an exemption on the basis of disability or religious belief. The University continues to strongly encourage all employees to be vaccinated.
For further information on the definition of a covered contractor employee and the applicability of the vaccination requirement, please visit coronavirus.uga.edu/executive-order.
Vaccination Requirement and Timing
You are considered “fully vaccinated” under the Federal Guidance two weeks after receiving a second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or two weeks after receiving a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. To be fully vaccinated by the December 8, 2021 federal deadline, you must get your vaccine before the deadlines listed above, and, regardless of which vaccine you choose, the final dose must be administered by November 24, 2021.
The University Health Center is administering the COVID-19 vaccine for free to any eligible member of the UGA community over the age of 16. Click here to schedule an appointment. Alternatively, you may choose to be vaccinated by your primary care physician or any COVID-19 vaccine provider, as long as you meet the deadlines listed above.

Non-Closure Emergency Leave Employees may take up to eight (8) hours of Non-Closure Emergency Leave for the purpose of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. Employees may also take up to a total of sixteen (16) hours of Non-Closure Emergency Leave if they receive a COVID-19 vaccine and experience negative side effects that prohibit the performance of their duties of employment. If receiving multiple doses of a vaccine, this is a total of up to 8 hours and 16 hours respectively across all doses.
The availability of Non-Closure Emergency Leave has been extended until 11/27/2021 as a result of Georgia executive order 10.21.21.01. For additional information, please visit the UGA Coronavirus website.
Fewer COVID Cases Reported and Lowest Positivity Rate of the Fall Number of cases drops; positivity rate reaches all-time low while in session
