COVID-19 Testing for Holiday Travel

If you are traveling this holiday season where official documentation of testing is not required, plan ahead and get free asymptomatic testing at the University Health Center. Test results take two to three days. Please note: asymptomatic test result print outs do not meet the requirements for airline travel/clearance.

UHC does offer travel clinic consults and testing for a fee, but individuals are not guaranteed same or next day appointments, so it is best to plan early.  The Travel Clinic does provide appropriate and acceptable documentation that meets travel requirements for international travel. There is a fee for the visit and charges depend on what is ordered.

In addition, UHC’s lab offers same-day testing for $100. Results are sent via email.

Pop-up COVID-19 Testing Before Holidays

The UGA College of Public Health, in partnership with the UHC, will offer pop-up COVID-19 testing at the Tate Center ahead of the Thanksgiving and winter breaks. Walk-up testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 22, Dec. 8 and Dec. 20. No appointments are necessary for these services.

Reports of COVID-19 Staying Low as Semester Winds Down

As the University of Georgia heads into the Thanksgiving Break, reported cases of COVID-19 increased slightly from the previous week. UGA is offering additional opportunities for testing and free vaccines on campus for all students, faculty and staff.

A total of 29 cases were reported for the week of Nov. 8-14, an increase of seven cases from the previous week. This week’s figure still marks a 95% decrease from the peak of cases reported around Labor Day. In addition, four out of 405 asymptomatic individuals tested positive, for a rate of 1%.

Update to Federal Contractor Vaccination Requirement

On Nov. 4, 2021, the White House announced that the Dec. 8, 2021 deadline for all covered contractor employees to be fully vaccinated unless otherwise exempted has been extended. As a result of this action, the deadline for covered contractor employees to receive their final vaccination dose—either their second dose of a two-dose vaccine (e.g.: Pfizer or Moderna), or single dose of a single-dose vaccine (e.g.: Johnson & Johnson)—is now set as Jan. 4, 2022.

This is a change to previous communications to campus that indicated the deadline would be Dec. 8, 2021. The new deadline of Jan. 4, 2022 takes effect immediately.

Notifications are being made on a rolling basis as we identify covered individuals. Please monitor your email to see if you are affected.

All covered contractor employees who are not seeking an exemption will need to begin documenting that they have been vaccinated, as required by the Federal Guidance. Employees may submit one of five accepted forms of proof as verification of COVID-19 vaccination status. Exemptions to these requirements may be available for covered employees who communicate to the University that they cannot comply with the vaccination because of a disability (which would include medical conditions) or because of a sincerely held religious belief. Employees may submit proof of vaccination status or a request for an exemption through the DawgCheck COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement Response Survey.

We encourage employees who have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine to do so as soon as possible and remind you that an employee may take up to eight (8) hours of Non-Closure Emergency Leave for the purpose of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. In addition, an employee may also take up to sixteen (16) hours of Non-Closure Emergency Leave if he or she receives a COVID-19 vaccine and experiences negative side effects that prohibit the performance of their duties of employment. For additional information, please see Guidance on leave time for COVID-19 Vaccinations.

Timing for Vaccinations:

  • The Moderna vaccine consists of two shots administered four weeks apart. For that reason, you should have your first dose by Dec. 7, 2021 and your second by Jan. 4, 2022 in order to meet the Federal deadline.
  • The Pfizer vaccine also consists of two shots administered three weeks apart. For that reason, you should have your first dose by Dec. 14, 2021 and your second dose by Jan. 4, 2022 in order to meet the Federal deadline.
  • The Johnson & Johnson vaccine consists of a single dose. Therefore, you have until Jan. 4, 2022 to receive your vaccine dose in order to meet the Federal deadline.

The University Health Center is administering the COVID-19 vaccine for free to any eligible member of the UGA community over the age of 16. Click here to schedule an appointment.  Alternatively, you may choose to be vaccinated by your primary care physician or any COVID-19 vaccine provider, as long as you meet the deadlines listed above.

Proof of Vaccination Required

All covered contractor employees will need to document that they have been vaccinated, as required by the Federal Guidance. Whether you have already been vaccinated or will get your vaccination in the coming weeks, you will be required to submit proof of your vaccination through this DawgCheck COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement Response Survey. The survey allows you to submit one of five accepted forms of proof as verification of your COVID-19 vaccination status.
