Accounting Professor Recognized for Analytics Integration
Associate Professor and PwC Faculty fellow, Margaret Christ was recently received the Innovation in Accounting Education Award from the American Accounting Association. Along with her co-authors, Christ was recognized for developing a curriculum for what she considers "an analytics mindset". With support from the EY Academic Resource Center, the publication is being used by institutions across the world, including the Tull School of Accounting where she incorporates the use of data sets and technology in her curriculum to enable students to succeed in their future careers. We are grateful for faculty like Christ who have prepared our alumni for success. Click here for the full Terry news article. R Hughes Reinvents the Showroom
Ryan Hughes (BBA '04) and Steven Leonard (BBA '06) have set the bar high for fellow interior designers to highlight their multi-line showrooms. Their personal approach has created a unique space where customers can experience each piece through their distinct branding. What sets them apart from other interior showrooms is their involvement from set-up, photography, and marketing. Instead of vendors creating their own staging, Hughes and Leonard maintain consistency by hosting their own photo shoots, creating displays, and most importantly - connecting with their customers. "How many English arm sofas can you get from how many different showrooms in Atlanta? A lot,” says Hughes. “So you probably are going to buy that sofa from the person that you like the best,” he says. “People buy from people at the end of the day. They just do.” You can read more about R Hughes here. Business/ Economics, ILA Scholar Maya Clark, '21 Protiviti With classes abruptly shifting online due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, the spring semester wrapped up in a way that no one could have predicted. Summer came and with it, uncertainty. All study abroad programs were cancelled and many internships too. We are sharing a few examples of resilient Terry students who persevered and made the most of their internships during the “Summer of Covid.”
"Cancer does not stop for COVID-19" was a phrase I became used to very quickly once starting my 12-week internship with Varian Medical Systems via Zoom. While I anticipated escaping the Georgia heat and experiencing California for the summer, I came to love my virtual experience with the company whose mission is to create a world without a fear of cancer. I gained first-hand experience of seeing the impact of the pandemic on supply chain operations and worked to provide strategic assistance to the Regulatory Affairs/Quality Affairs department.
After presenting my summer project to Varian's executive leadership team, I received an offer to continue implementing my proposal by working part-time during the school year. I couldn't have done this without the support of my mentor and fellow Dawg, Elisha Finney, BBA '83. Her selflessness, kindness, and investment in my personal and professional development, as a woman in business, has given me the resources and knowledge to excel this summer." - Sabina Ashurova, BBA '21
"This summer I had the incredible opportunity to work at Veritiv Corporation as their Human Resources intern. Throughout my six weeks at Veritiv, I was able to gain amazing experience in each of these three departments: Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, and Total Rewards. I had the opportunity to recruit candidates on LinkedIn, lead an Instagram takeover, research diversity and inclusion metrics, develop a 2021 annual enrollment schedule and so much more. I also attended weekly professional development trainings with the other interns and concluded my time at Veritiv by giving a 15-minute presentation about what I had learned over the summer.
I was incredibly grateful that the leaders at Veritiv worked so hard to give their 10 interns a well-rounded, in-person experience, despite the limitations of COVID-19. I was also thrilled to discover that I wasn’t the only one wearing a UGA mask in the office. I had the opportunity to work alongside UGA alumna and Terry grad, Nancy Whatley (BBA '81). As the Director of Talent Acquisition, Nancy welcomed me into the program, and I appreciate all the time she invested in me. All of the employees at Veritiv were incredibly kind and helpful, but it was especially comforting to know I had someone from UGA in my corner cheering me on throughout the summer." -Katie Ritthaler, BBA 2021

Paula 'PJ' Davis
After serving in the marines, Paula 'PJ' Davis pursued her bachelors and masters degrees from Terry College to further her career in business. She then joined Deloitte in 2010, where she has focused her efforts in analytics and automation. Her biggest project to date is developing Deloitte’s Analytics Innovation Center. The center is now offering global support and consists of over 300 team members. “It was all possible because of the combination of my undergrad and MBA,” PJ says. “The undergrad had the coding and data modeling...and then the MBA honed in on my leadership and management skills. It’s allowed me to lead technical teams very well.” Paula now serves on the MBA Advisory Council where she advocates for student success. Read more about her journey from military to MBA here.
